To help celebrate Black History Month, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will welcome Dee Reed ’08 on Tuesday, February 25, to the Harvey Auditorium in the Conservatory of Music. Reed, who recently retired from the College, will speak at 2 p.m. about the Lost Creek Settlement of Terre Haute.
Reed is a descendant of the settlers of Lost Creek and has done extensive research into the settlement, her family and their role. The Lost Creek Settlement is one of several Black communities established in Indiana in the early 1800s. The settlement became an essential part of the Underground Railroad and provided refuge for Black Americans who were fleeing enslavement.
